God of War
Sony Santa Monica's action series — a Greek-mythology brawler that reinvented itself as a Norse-mythology character study without losing the combat.

God of War's arc is one of the rarer ones in AAA: a flagship series that spent a decade being very good at one thing, then rebuilt itself as something almost entirely different and was even better for it. The Greek trilogy is still some of the best fixed-camera action on the PS2/PS3. The 2018 reboot reframed Kratos as a character rather than a delivery system for rage, and Ragnarök closed that arc with real confidence.
This hub treats the two eras as two distinct projects. The old games deserve their own retrospectives. The new ones deserve to be judged on what they actually are — character-driven action games with some of the best combat systems Sony's first-party teams have ever shipped.
Reviews, retrospectives, and a long look at what "reinvention" actually costs a long-running series.
