Where to Start With Final Fantasy in 2026

Sixteen numbered entries, dozens of spin-offs, and no real continuity between games. Here's the honest, no-filler way into Square Enix's flagship series.

Final Fantasy is probably the most intimidating "iconic" franchise in gaming to get into — not because the games are hard, but because nobody can agree on which one you should play first. This is the version of that answer that actually works in 2026.

The Short Version

  • Want the classic Final Fantasy experience? Play Final Fantasy VII Remake, then Rebirth.
  • Want a self-contained modern action RPG? Play Final Fantasy XVI.
  • Want to understand why the series matters? Play Final Fantasy VI or IX (both available on modern platforms via the Pixel Remaster line and PC).
  • Want an MMO you can actually take seriously as an RPG? Play Final Fantasy XIV, starting with the free trial.

Why There's No Single "Right" First Entry

Every numbered Final Fantasy is a standalone story. That's the franchise's design ethos and always has been. Entry points age — what felt essential in 2005 feels dated now, and what was "niche" in 2010 is often the fan favourite today.

The best advice isn't "start with the oldest one that still holds up." It's "start with the tone you actually want."

The Tone Guide

  • Operatic, worldbuilding-first: IX, XII, XVI
  • Character-driven and emotional: VII (Remake/Rebirth), X, VI
  • Weird, experimental, or divisive: VIII, XIII, XV
  • Pure mechanical depth: V, Tactics, XIV

One Honest Warning

A few Final Fantasy games remain genuinely difficult to recommend to a newcomer — not because they're bad, but because they assume familiarity the series no longer teaches. Skip them on a first pass. They'll still be there later.
